The Salem witch trials, held in 1692-1693 in colonial Massachusetts, remain one of the most infamous examples of mass hysteria and injustice in American history. Triggered by a combination of superstition, fear, and religious fervor, the trials led to the execution of 20 people, mostly women, and the imprisonment of many others. The drama began in the small village of Salem when a group of young girls claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft.
